Recap of the fundraiser this weekend -
We were able to *exceed * our humble fundraising goal in the first 3 hours of the event
In the days following Hurricane Maria, almost everyone we spoke with expressed concerned. People were calling and messaging us every day looking for ways to help provide relief to their fellow American citizens who are struggling to secure even basic necessities for themselves and their families in Puerto Rico.
The “VIVA LA ISLA” relief effort was designed as a way for Chicagoans to come together in a collective effort to contribute to and show support for Puerto Rico’s grassroots relief & recovery efforts.
While there are many large-scale relief efforts directing resources & funds to Puerto Rico, basic needs such as access to food, water, medicine, & electricity are still going unmet 4 weeks after the hurricane hit – and a significant portion of the resources that do make it to the island are being heavily concentrated in metropolitan cities like San Juan.
Meeting our $2,500 fundraising goal will allow us to send funds & material supplies to some of the hardest hit towns/rural regions of the island which are receiving much less aid & attention.
Thanks to the generosity of Chicago’s Congruent Space Gallery, the Goldin Institute, & the collective effort of a dozen young Chicago Artists & Activists, this campaign has no overhead costs.
Therefore, 100% of your donation will go to organizations proving to the people of Puerto Rico.
