The Trans Village Project

is a grassroots mutual aid initiative focused on creating eco-friendly housing in the Cascadia region of the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and inclusive space where queer and minority individuals can live free from housing discrimination. Through this project, we aim to foster pathways to homeownership, promote self-sustainability, and enhance the quality of life for queer communities in a transformative and unprecedented way.

Why is the Trans Village Project Necessary?

Over the past five years, the United States has seen a troubling rise in anti-trans, anti-immigrant, anti-diversity, and anti-queer legislation. Thousands of discriminatory bills have been introduced nationwide, with hundreds being passed, particularly in states like Florida and Texas, which are among the least safe for marginalized communities. Unfortunately, this trend extends beyond U.S. borders, as countries like the UK and Canada are scaling back LGBTQ protections amidst a resurgence of regressive and fascist ideologies.

Extensive research has led us to conclude that the most effective way to support our queer siblings is by creating a safe, sustainable community in Washington and Oregon. These states offer a comparatively safer environment, allowing us to relocate individuals from hostile regions while advocacy efforts for their rights continue.

Moreover, the urgent need for sustainable, long-term housing solutions within the LGBTQ community cannot be overstated. LGBTQ youth represent a disproportionate share of the homeless population, and similar disparities exist for adults due to discrimination in housing, employment, and family dynamics. Addressing these inequities is critical, and the Trans Village Project seeks to provide a secure foundation for those in need.

Building Plans

The Cascadia region, encompassing parts of Washington, Oregon, and California, is named for its proximity to the Cascade Mountain Range. Renowned for its biodiversity, clean air, abundant opportunities, and progressive politics, this region has been selected as the ideal starting point for the Trans Village Project. We aim to establish our community on the west side of the Cascades, as close to the coast as safely feasible. Our goal is to secure either a ghost town or a larger parcel of available land to begin development as soon as possible.

To accommodate a variety of opportunities, we have prepared several building plans and blueprints.

Monolithic Dome Homes

One primary design incorporates monolithic dome homes, inspired by ancient architectural techniques. These structures are constructed by:

1. Laying a solid foundation.

2. Inflating a reusable balloon to create the dome’s shape.

3. Reinforcing the structure with metal rebar.

4. Spraying the surface with concrete.

Once complete, the balloon is deflated and can be reused for additional structures, making this method cost-effective and time-efficient. These domes offer exceptional durability, being waterproof, fireproof, windproof, and pest-resistant—ideal for addressing the environmental challenges of living in Cascadia. The foundation will include a lower set area with a ground fridge or cellar to help regulate indoor temperatures.

Additional Features

Our plans also incorporate sustainable and practical design elements, including:

Rain Collection Systems: Integrated with each home for water conservation.

Paved Walkways: Slightly sloped to redirect water into gardens and ensure easy, accessible movement around the home. Made with permeable concrete so that water will be absorbed into the ground rather than forming ice on the surface.

Mosscrete Entrances: To enhance biodiversity, regulate temperature, and provide a natural aesthetic.

Compact Utilities: Designed to maximize living space while maintaining functionality.

By combining innovative building techniques with sustainability, the Trans Village Project aims to create eco-friendly, resilient, and inclusive spaces that meet the unique needs of our community.

We have two different blueprints for monolithic homes, and blueprints to renovate apartment complexes in the near future.

Goals

Our vision is to create a community that fosters safety, inclusivity, and self-expression, where individuals are free to live authentically—provided their actions do not harm others. We encourage residents to personalize their homes in a way that reflects their identities, including the display of flags and colors representing diverse communities, ensuring that all individuals feel seen, valued, and represented.
