The LINGUIST List is dedicated to providing information on languages and linguistics and to providing the discipline of linguistics with the infrastructure necessary to function in an increasingly digital world. LINGUIST List is a free resource, run by linguistics faculty and graduate students and supported crucially by the donations of our readership. Without that support, we wouldn’t be able to provide the high level of service our readers have always been able to count on.
The LINGUIST List began in December 1990 as a simple mailing list for announcements and discussion between linguists. It quickly acquired a life of its own, growing from a mailing list into a major web portal and social media site for linguists, students, publishers and more. Today, the List reaches over 85,000 readers through multiple channels, with over 1.5 million unique visitors to our website per year. We publish approximately 6,000 announcements per year, all relevant to linguistics and of interest to the global linguistics community. We announce new books and journals, calls and conferences, jobs and graduate support positions, and more. We are proud to not only provide an important service, but a quality one. We ensure that linguists everywhere have access to important, timely, accurate information–for free!
The LINGUIST List’s day-to-day operations are primarily run by a team of IU Graduate Assistants, who receive funding from the LINGUIST List in order to pursue their degrees. Because our services are, and always will be, free of charge to our readers, we rely heavily on the support of our readership. Your generous support ensures that we are able to uphold our mission, supporting current and future linguists for years to come. With your help, we are proud to continue to serve the linguistics community as we have for nearly 30 years.
