There is a crisis of food insecurity in
the metro Atlanta region.
Even before COVID-19 struck, the Atlanta Community Food
Bank estimated that more than 755,000 people in Metro Atlanta and North
Georgia were food insecure, turning to food pantries and meal services to
feed themselves and their families.
There are a number of organizations that
have been working to combat food insecurity in Metro Atlanta. Organizations
such as Food Well Alliance, MUST Ministries, and the Atlanta Community Food
Bank have been at the forefront of feeding vulnerable Atlantans through a
variety of methods. There is also a strong urban farming and local food culture
in the metro Atlanta region. This culture is helping address food insecurity,
but their work is not enough to address the pressing need.
Two things are immediately evident:
- More land and more farmers are
needed to produce healthy, local food.
- More innovative means of local
food distribution and marketing must be pioneered.
Where can this land come from and where can these means of
distribution come from?
Metro Atlanta faith communities and the lands that
they own provide part of the solution for these two questions. There are
over 100 communities of faith within a 20 mile radius of downtown Atlanta that sit on a
combined total of 132 acres with potential
for urban agriculture.
What if we could increase agricultural
production in metro Atlanta, address widespread food insecurity through that
production, and help faith communities increase their mission and ministry to
their surrounding communities all at the same time? What if faith lands could become farmlands?
