Our purpose is to reduce the overpopulation problem in our community and to improve the quality of life for our pets.
The first phase of Spay Ship went from June, 2008 to August 2010. Phase 2 began again at the end of January 2012. Between January 31 and March 27, after placing one craigslist ad and letting word of mouth work, we issued 89 vouchers for $2700. In March alone, we have spent $1168 on vouchers for 37 cat spays and neuters. 40% of our applications come from Springfield, although we are not targeting any area.
During the first phase we began to target Springfield, as did other local groups. According to our experimental measurement, the Craigslist Kitten Index (CLKI), this seems to have made a significant impact. While most areas monitored, including Eugene, showed little difference over the years, Springfield’s CLKI has been dropping impressively. We will be using this to measure our future progress.
We funded 562 surgeries in 2012 and over 500 so far this year, with another 100 expected during our Oktoberfest promotion. With new funding, we hope to do still more in 2014.
