“Rain Catchers in Your School” is an environmental education and water conservation project for schools in Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake Counties of northern California -- here's a great video about our program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRE8z7aRCn4
The non-profit North Coast Resource Conservation & Development Council works to spread this important drought-response initiative throughout the four counties of our water-short region. Our short video shows some of the systems we have installed--and our latest "Rain Catcher" was just put in on March 14, 2015, at Anderson Valley Elementary School in rural Mendocino County--this project was truly a community effort with kids, parents, and people wanting to help conserve water all turning out to make this "Rain Catcher" happen! The biggest hit with the kids was the Edible Aquifer we provided, but the final creek walk to observe the aquatic ecosystem and wildlife which will be helped by water conservation was also a great moment.
Our “Rain Catchers in Your School” program includes on-the-ground change as well as educational outreach to schools on the importance and benefits of collecting rainwater from rooftops, storing the water, and using the stored water in the dry season for irrigation. Our youth are the change-makers of the future, and with "Rain Catchers," we not only help our local community conserve water immediately, but we educate the children who will carry the water conservation message forward to their parents, friends, and people far into the future.
We design and build the "Rain Catchers" system working closely with the school, providing everything from gutters to tanks. Volunteers help us construct the "Rain Catcher," maximizing community and youth involvement. Each $5000 of "Rain Catcher's" funding will allow project design and installation of a large tank with piping and pad, as well as conducting the educational outreach at one school. We are asking for funds for two Rain Catchers ($10,000), plus an additional $1,500 to pay for printing outreach brochures, and general project support.
