Bring The Perry Initiative to new sites across the US!

The Perry Initiative is a non-profit organization that inspires young women to pursue careers in Orthopaedics through day-long outreach programs for high school students (Perry Outreach Programs – POP). POP feature laboratory-based workshops that introduce surgical and engineering skills along with small-group mentoring from prominent women surgeons, biomedical engineers, and business professionals in Orthopaedics. The program has expanded from 15 students at one site in 2009 to 950 students annually at 24 sites nationwide in 2013. The program is continually expanding, and we are expecting to reach 50 sites by 2020.

Perry Outreach Programs are held at medical centers, universities, and high schools across the country. A typical program hosts 30 local high school students and consists of four faculty lectures and two laboratory sessions. During the laboratory sessions, students perform mock surgeries on anatomical models. Engineering and clinical faculty from host institutions speak at the events, and medical and undergraduate student volunteers guide students through the hands-on workshops. The Perry Outreach Program curriculum is well defined and has been continuously refined through a formal program evaluation process. The curriculum is unique and has received national attention for its innovative, career-oriented approach to science and technology education.
