We are just a couple of girls with regular jobs who have fallen into trying to rescue a whole bunch of cats from feral colonies near where we live. Spaying and neutering the adults, trying to get the friendly ones adopted, and releasing the ones that are too feral to be adopted after surgery. We capture any kittens we find (which are MANY), bathe them as most are covered in fleas, and foster ourselves or ask for help from friends while we look for adopters! We have rescued over 100 cats and kittens so far, and TNR'd (Trap, Neuter, Release) another 25+, just in the past year. The feral cat situation in this area (and so many areas!) is out of control, and it's overwhelming. We took 23 kittens from one house, in one day, last spring - so we then had 34 kittens to find homes for at that point! We also really want to help the kind souls trying to care for the cats in their neighborhood who can't afford to pay for surgeries for them all, and feel helpless as they watch the number of cats around them grow exponentially. Most are on fixed incomes, some on food stamps, and they are still trying to feed sometimes dozens of cats daily. We are trying to help not only with surgeries and finding homes for the kittens, but also by donating food to them. This problem is never-ending, and we have been trying to take care of most of the expenses ourselves, however if we want to continue this work we are going to have to get help. We are being alerted to new colonies needing help all the time and these homeowners don't know where else to go as there are not a lot of resources in these smaller communities.
We are mostly focused on cats, as that is keeping us very busy - however we also took in a couple of puppies that were running the streets (we found the owners and asked permission to re-home them). They both found great homes and we were very happy to be able to help them off the streets right before things got really cold this winter. And a lucky trio of rabbits found their way to us and found new homes, their owner was about to release them onto the streets to fend for themselves.
But back to our regularly scheduled programming: CATS! The surgeries are generally the biggest expense unless vet care is needed for a sick or injured cat or kitten. But beyond that the cost of flea meds, ringworm treatments, eye ointment, litter, food and toys is significant. If you love cats and want to help with the plight of the poor feral baby that has little hope for a happy, healthy, and flea-free life without intervention - then we need you! Thank you for anything you can give, every bit will go to help care for these cats and kittens - they would thank you too if they could!
