Help Support Dr. Sarah Kaplan Browne’s Recovery
Two weeks ago, my lifelong and beloved friend, Dr. Sarah Kaplan Browne, suffered a catastrophic hemorrhagic stroke. She spent over two weeks in neuro-critical care, underwent two brain surgeries, and lost the use of her entire right side. While we are deeply relieved that she is now stable and has begun the long process of rehabilitation, her recovery will be slow, complex, and uncertain.
If you know Sarah, you know she is brilliant, compassionate, and endlessly generous. For many years, she served as an infectious disease specialist and public servant, working tirelessly at the NIH and FDA to protect public health. She also volunteered at the VA hospital, where she provided care to veterans in need. Sarah has always been the one to step forward in service of others—her patients, her colleagues, her friends, and her family.
Now, she needs us.
Tragically, the stroke occurred just days after Sarah left her previous role and shortly before she was due to begin a new job. As a result, she was left without health insurance, income, or access to employer-provided benefits. She will not be able to start her new job, and it is unclear when—or if—she’ll be able to return to work. As the sole financial provider for her two children, David and Julia, this sudden health crisis has upended their lives.
While Sarah focuses on healing, the financial burdens continue to mount. In addition to medical and rehabilitation costs, she now faces the ongoing expenses of daily life and caring for her children. Our social safety nets offer little immediate support—her eligibility for benefits could take over a year to process.
We are hoping to raise $50,000 to help ease the financial strain on Sarah and her family during this time. These funds will support her medical care, therapy, living costs, and ensure stability for David and Julia. Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference. Even if you cannot give financially, sharing this message helps us reach others who may be able to help.
Sarah has given so much to others. It’s our turn to give back.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Bridget Scala
