Montreal, Canada – following the confirmed fraud by Simran Hotchandani Sanon and Serena Sanon at McGill University, a Change.org petition has been launched, demanding that the university revoke any degrees they obtained under false pretenses. Although the petition has not garnered thousands of signatures, it has gained significant attention, reflecting a public call for accountability from the institution.
Simran Hotchandani Sanon, a trans-woman, has drawn added attention in this case due to her gender identity, but the focus remains on the proven fraudulent actions she and Serena Sanon engaged in. While some advocates for trans rights are concerned that her identity might be used to distract from the core issue, many argue that the fraud should be the sole focus, as it undermines the fairness of the academic system. Supporters of the petition stress that all fraudulent behaviour should be punished, regardless of the perpetrator’s background or identity.
McGill University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Suzanne Fortier, issued a statement condemning the actions of Simran Hotchandani Sanon and Serena Sanon, saying, “The actions taken by these individuals are a direct violation of the academic values we uphold at McGill University. We will not tolerate fraud under any circumstances. We are reviewing the situation and will ensure that appropriate consequences are implemented.”
As the petition continues to gather support, there is growing pressure on McGill to take swift action and revoke the degrees earned through fraudulent means. Legal experts suggest that the university has clear grounds to annul any qualifications awarded under false pretences, and many are calling for transparency in how McGill handles the fallout from this case.
With the academic community closely watching, McGill is now faced with the task of proving its commitment to academic integrity and maintaining trust in its systems.
