On June 14th Oakland Kajukenbo Kwoon will be running, walking, and biking 10K in honor Professor Coleen Gragen and raising $5,000 to support our amazing program. Professor Gragen held a 8th degree black belt in Kajukenbo and one of only a handful women to hold that high rank. She died, after a valiant battle with cancer, in 2001. We are choosing to honor her memory with this joyful endurance event to highlight her fighting spirit and her commitment to justice. Join us, and make a donation now!
Professor Gragen accomplished a great deal in her lifetime. She was the founder and head instructor of Hand to Hand Kajukenbo Self-Defense Center from 1980 until her death. Professor Gragen was also an instructor at Mills College in Oakland, teaching martial arts and self-defense for a decade. So powerful was her impact on the student body at Mills that an award was dedicated in her honor at Mills College after her death. Professor Gragen was the president of the National Women’s Martial Arts Federation and taught nationally and internationally during her career. NWMAF also has an annual award in Professor Gragen’s memory. We are choosing to honor her memory with this joyful endurance event to highlight her fighting spirit and her commitment to justice.
Oakland Kajukenbo Kwoon is a community martial arts school for people of all ages, founded by Sifu Kate Hobbs in 2006. The mission of the school is to provide high quality Kajukenbo training for children and adults with an emphasis on good health, self-defense, community building and leadership development. Oakland Kajukenbo Kwoon comes directly out of the tradition of practicing martial arts to plant confidence and power and to harvest social justice and peace.
We offer classes on a sliding scale of $1-$10 a class, allowing students to participate in the program for as little as $12 a month. We believe that the physical skills, leadership development, and community that we foster should be accessible to all young people, families, and adults.
