Israel is at war. Jerusalem provides bomb shelters but our community has to maintain the one in its neighborhood. Help us improve the dilapidated space's plumbing, air conditioning, and fix the leaky ceiling.

Israel faces missile threats from both Hamas in the south and Hezbollah in the north. At any moment, air raid sirens can send us running to shelters - but not everyone has an air raid shelter in their building.
The Municipality of Jerusalem allocates public shelters throughout the city but often leaves the local community to maintain them. Here in the historic Nachlaot neighborhood, more than a hundred locals must crowd into a space with leaky ceilings, dilapidated plumbing, and inadequate air conditioning.
On top of that, during wartime, the space must be left unlocked, since every second counts when seeking refuge from incoming rockets. That means vagrants and junkies have easy access to the shelter at all times as well, leaving the community with cleanup work and, too often, the need to replace destroyed items such as the furniture, children's toys, décor, or books that residents have donated to make the bleak place a little more welcoming.
You can make a difference in the lives of a war-weary community by contributing to the upkeep of the shelter.
Our first priorities will be to repair the run-down toilet facilities, which at present, women must share with men; installation of a proper air conditioning system; and working with the city to fix the concrete roof of the shelter, which lets in accumulated rainwater.
One day, when the war ends, the space can continue to function as an inviting community space, thanks to your generosity!
