Kristina Burrack - Homeward Bound

From Kristina Burrack

I'm raising funds to participate in Homeward Bound, a global leadership development program for women in STEMM. With a focus on climate change and sustainability, the program culminates in a trip to Antarctica.

Update! Over the past few months, I received generous donations through colleagues at work, totaling about $5,000! With your help I can reach my fundraising goal for my journey to Antarctica in early 2025!

Today - April 25 - is World Malaria Day! By supporting my fundraising efforts, you will also be supporting my research goals to develop more effective malaria vaccines!

More Info

I'm an immunologist researching the immune response to infections of global importance, particularly malaria, as well as cancer. Through my research and leadership, I want to develop therapies and vaccines to improve the lives of those in resource-poor areas that are particularly susceptible to infections like malaria, especially children and pregnant women. I'm participating in the Homeward Bound (HB) initiative to develop my skills, knowledge, and confidence to be an effective leader.

Our world needs more women leaders and women in STEMM, a vision about which I am determined to see come to reality. HB was founded to create a global network of women with a background in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine) leading and able to solve our world’s greatest challenges. My participation in HB will help me learn skills to mentor the next generation of women in STEMM and empower other women to lead. By connecting influential women in STEMM and putting them through this leadership initiative, HB will ensure that there is greater diversity at the global leadership table.

My interest in using immunology to improve health and cure diseases is also linked to understanding how climate change will affect the evolution and spread of infectious diseases in the future. At the culmination of our year-long HB leadership training, we will travel to Antarctica to learn about the impact of climate change on our world.

Around half of the funds I raise will be for the HB program tuition, and the other half will go toward my trip to Antarctica. Please consider donating to help make an impact on world health and women in STEMM! Thank you!

I'm also a mom of 3, so I'm especially passionate about improving policies for mothers in science to succeed - including better parental leave, access to lactation support at work, reduced childcare costs. etc. I also love to read and garden, and I'm a triathlete.

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, consider donating to my donation portal at work (HHRI) - scroll down to "Homeward Bound":   https://www.hhrinstitute.org/donate-to-infectious-diseases/ To allocate your funds accordingly, please choose “other” as your designation choice and copy the following into the donation comment field: “Donation directed to HHRI, fundraising code: M03880, Homeward Bound”
