One Night Stand will be exhibited in the Historic Ward Rooming House, a significant venue for preserving Miami’s African American heritage. Through these photographs, I document musicians against the backdrop of empty lots and repurposed buildings where legendary venues like the Harlem Square Club once stood. Overtown, known as the “Harlem of the South,” attracted musicians like Sam Cooke, Count Basie, and Billie Holiday. 1963 Sam Cooke recorded One Night Stand at the Harlem Square Club, delivering a raw, passionate performance that captured Overtown’s vibrant spirit.

Why We Need Your Support

Your donation will help bring this important history to life. Funds raised will go towards:

Producing the exhibit and immersive experience at the Historic Ward Rooming House.

Audio-visual equipment to share archival recordings, music, and interviews for a richer narrative.

Gathering oral histories from local musicians and community members to ensure their stories are preserved.

Hosting community events, including a special celebration on Sam Cooke’s One Night Stand recording anniversary.

I Played Here is more than a photo series; it’s a bridge between past and present, a project that brings people together to honor an often overshadowed legacy. By supporting this project, you’re helping to preserve Miami’s cultural history and ensure these stories remain alive for future generations. Join us in celebrating Overtown’s musical legacy.
