My name is Bradford Smith, and I’m writing this with a mix of vulnerability and hope. For years, I wore the uniform of the U.S. Navy, dedicating myself to serving our country. But today, I’m fighting a different battle—one for stability, safety, and a fresh start for myself, my incredible girlfriend Sheena Romine, and my four legged best friend, Handsome, an amazing dog; who’s been my shadow through some of my darkest days.
During my service, I sustained injuries that have left me with chronic pain and mobility challenges. Simple tasks like walking long distances or biking—our current means of transportation—have become agonizing. Despite this, we’ve pushed forward, determined to build a life together. But the truth is, we’re stuck. We’ve faced homelessness, couch-surfed with kind friends, and even slept in our cramped car until it broke down beyond repair. Every day feels like a race against time to find shelter, get to medical appointments, or secure work—all while carrying the weight of uncertainty.
What keeps me going is knowing I’m not alone. Sheena has stood by me with unwavering strength, working tirelessly to help us survive. And Handsome? He’s more than a pet; he’s family. His gentle presence has been a lifeline through PTSD and sleepless nights. But I want *more* for them—a safe home where we can heal, and a reliable vehicle to regain independence. Walking miles in pain or biking in harsh weather isn’t sustainable. A car would mean access to healthcare, job opportunities, and the dignity of mobility I once took for granted.
This is where I humbly ask for your support. We’re struggling with raising funds to secure a modest rental home (even a small apartment would be a sanctuary) and a used vehicle capable of accommodating my disabilities. Every dollar will go toward:
- **First month’s rent + security deposit**
- **A dependable used vehicle** (prioritizing affordability and accessibility)
- **Basic essentials** to start our new chapter
I never imagined I’d need to ask for help like this. Pride is hard to set aside, but love—for my partner, my dog, and the life we’re fighting for—is stronger. If you can contribute, know that your kindness will directly impact three lives yearning for safety and a chance to thrive again. If you’re unable to give, sharing this message means the world.
To those who serve or have served: Thank you. To everyone reading this: From the bottom of my heart, thank you for seeing our story. Together, we can turn struggle into hope.
With gratitude,
Bradford G Smith
