I'm Jen, the founder/director of The Mom of an Addict, Inc. When this organization started five years ago, the goals were to let others know they are not alone and to offer others what I wish I would have had years ago during my son's active use - education about the disease and a place to be surrounded by people who just "got" me. Today, the goals are the same.
What started in my home with my own funds has grown into something I couldn't have imagined. We have people from coast to coast in the US and from a couple places outside the US joining us at our in-person and online meetings. We've grown from one meeting to eight, and the demand continues. I have a sticky note with names of people who want to start meetings in their area. Each time I get a phone call or receive an email, I remember how I felt. I remember the time I sat across a table from a dear friend revealing to her what we were facing...and asking her promise she wouldn't tell anyone. Each time I interact with someone who has a shaky voice or tears streaming down his/her cheeks, I'm reminded of how I used to feel. And I'm motivated to continue letting others know they are not alone, no matter where they live.
I care about this cause and the people more than I could express in this story or in any video. I've been there. I've done that.
I will make this happen. Our curriculum was put into its first video format nearly three years ago, and the funds were raised for then. They will be raised again. The need for what we do is unfortunately increasing, and I won't stop until I'm no longer able to speak or move. This is not just a job to me. This is who I am - The Mom of an Addict. With the incredible board of directors and our amazing volunteer meeting leaders beside me, we will spread HOPE across the country, and the world.
Like the video posted says, I'm raising money to update our video curriculum so it is current and applicable to any location across the country (or globe). I'm raising money so we can create the grief curriculum for those who have experienced a loss due to substances. Our board leader Donna is using the worst experience of her life to write these grief lessons. She is not allowing her daughter's life and legacy to be forgotten.
So, together with the board and volunteer meeting leaders, I'm The Mom of an Addict asking you to help us with our mission to let others know they are not alone and that there is always HOPE.
