Erciş is a district of Van province in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. Its history has very rich and deep roots. Here are some important points about the history of Erciş:
Prehistoric Period:Erciş The region has also been a settlement area in prehistoric times. Archaeological findings show that human settlement dates back to ancient times in this region.
Urartian Period: B.C. The region, which has been under the rule of the Urartian Kingdom since the 9th century, has been an important part of the Urartian civilization. Castles and waterways were built during this period.
Great Seljuk Period: After the 11th century, Seljuk Turks dominated the region. Berkil is a settlement very close to Erciş and bears traces of the Seljuk period.
Ottoman Period: It was incorporated into the borders of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. In this period, in addition to agriculture and animal husbandry, commercial activities also developed.
Republic Period: With the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, Erciş continued its existence as a district of Van province.
earthquakes: The major earthquakes that occurred on November 17, 1976 and October 23, 2011 negatively affected Erciş, and infrastructure and residences were severely damaged. After the 2011 earthquake, the city underwent a large-scale reconstruction process.
