My name is Jackie Blanco, and I'm reaching out to you today in a time of desperate need. My children and I have been through a harrowing experience that has left us homeless, stressed, and struggling to get back on our feet. We urgently need your support to rebuild our lives and find a safe, stable place to live.
We lived in a rental home where the conditions were far from habitable. Despite my repeated requests, the landlord neglected essential repairs, leading to excessive dust and poor indoor air quality. This situation severely impacted our health, causing my children to suffer from hives, asthma, and possibly cognitive and psychological impairments. The kitchen fan broke in February 2020 and wasn’t replaced until August 2023 due to the pandemic, further worsening our living conditions.
During this time, my mother acted as a gatekeeper between the landlord and me, often dismissing my concerns and complaints. Eventually, overwhelmed by the situation and anxious about potential eviction, my mother struggled to manage the repairs, leaving us to live in uninhabitable conditions. Her negligence, combined with the landlord's delays, compromised our health and belongings.
In late May, while my mother was on vacation in the Philippines, we received an unlawful detainer notice, requiring us to vacate the property by June 25, 2024. Despite my efforts to resolve the situation, I was eventually evicted by the sheriff on July 2, 2024. We were given very little time to retrieve our belongings, and my mother misled me about the timeframe, resulting in most of our possessions being discarded.
Since then, my children and I have been staying with relatives in a crowded home with 14 occupants. We sleep on a couch, enduring uncomfortable, sleepless nights and poor ergonomics. This has taken a toll on our physical and mental health. We have lost almost everything and now only have a drawstring laundry bag and a duffle bag of essentials. I personally have only a few pairs of pants, shorts, and undergarments. I am forced to wear the same clothes to bed that I wear during the day.
