We reached out goal! Their humanitarian parole applications are already on their way to DHS, and it's thanks to you.
At a time when things are feeling grim for my friends in Kabul, your generosity means a lot to them. It reminds them of the goodness in people's hearts, that they have supporters around the world fighting for them, and there is hope for them and their families.
Given today's events, I also wanted to let you know they are safe. One of them was outside the airport when the bombing occurred, but he is safe at home now. We will continue pushing for their safe evacuations...
The first time I flew to Kabul was with the U.S. Army in 2008. The last time I flew to Kabul was as a civilian in 2011. In that beautiful city, I met some of the most inspiring people I have ever known, but now their lives are in danger and they need your help! The Taliban have already started searching for them at their homes.
They need your help to cover the fees for submitting humanitarian parole applications with the Department of Homeland Security. It costs $575 for each of the 6 Afghans who apply. Any amount you can donate will make an impact in potentially saving their lives.
I cannot reveal the identity of these Afghans because of the risk, but they include 3 human rights defenders and peace activists, who dedicated their lives to helping the poor and survivors of war. They created programs to get kids back in school, to help women learn trades, and for healing through art, and they engaged in direct actions to fight for peace and human rights. They did this despite being born in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, when some of them had to flee and some of their relatives were murdered. They turned those heartbreaking experiences into hope, and risked their lives to spread that hope to others.
Haroon Law is working pro bono and moving mountains to submit humanitarian parole applications for these 3 Afghan activists, 2 of their wives, and 1 baby. They would not have been eligible to apply without the uplifting generosity of 3 American families, including strangers, who volunteered to offer their homes and financially sponsor these Afghans within hours of notice.
We are praying DHS will grant expedited parole requests so that our Afghan friends will be authorized to leave Afghanistan before August 31. But even if they miss this deadline, it will strengthen their cases for evacuation after the 31st. Or if they escape Afghanistan another way, humanitarian parole would allow them to wait in peace with friends in America while they apply for asylum or a visa.
Your donations would be greatly appreciated by my Afghan friends and their families, and we hope one day, when they are safe, you will be able to know their faces and learn their powerful stories. They didn't just make a difference in the lives of their community, they also made a difference in my life as an Afghanistan veteran, and I will always cherish their wisdom, kindness, and friendship.
