The School of Art, Architecture + Design’s MAD LABS provides 3D printing, laser engraving/cutting, and CNC routing & plasma cutting services to the faculty, students, and staff of the IU Bloomington campus; it has facilitated the research of individuals from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Informatics, and Kinesiology, in addition to all areas of the School of Art, Architecture + Design.
The newly established MAD LABS Support Fund will enhance the resources that the MAD LABS provide. One of the first priorities for the fund is the acquisition of the EVA robotic arm. The EVA robot is a user-friendly robotic arm that can be employed in realms as varied as automotive assembly, pharmaceutical processing, and large-scale 3D printing. Interchangeable end effectors (grippers, welders, 3D printers, etc.), six axes of movement, strength, speed, and accuracy allow the robotic arm to perform human-like gestures, but with exacting repeatability, at a scale not humanly possible. It functions in hazardous or antiseptic environments, and can repeatedly and accurately undertake the banal operations that are many times an unfortunate part of otherwise exciting research. It is particularly well-suited to pick-and-place routines, machine tending, and product testing, but the applications are limitless. Once EVA is acquired, students, faculty, and staff from across campus will be able to book dedicated time on the robotic arm.
With your gift to the MAD LABS Support Fund, you will assist in bringing the next generation of innovative technology to the entire IU Bloomington campus community. Make your gift today, and make a difference now and for the future.
