Thank you to all those who supported ESF's Supporting Women in Science Challenge! We flew past our $30,000 goal thanks to your participation. Your support means so much to ESF and to the many women at ESF who will benefit from this assistance.

Our crowd-funding campaign is over, but so many students still need your support to achieve their dreams of an ESF education. Visit http://www.esf.edu/development/ to make a tax-deductible charitable donation to the Women in Science Fund.

From the entire ESF family, thank you for your participation and commitment to Supporting Women in Science.

More Info

The Supporting Women in Science Challenge raises scholarship funds for deserving female students at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, N.Y. (www.esf.edu)

Your donation, combined with others, will help dedicated young women become the environmental leaders of the future.

ESF offers 24 undergraduate and 30 graduate degree programs in the sciences, engineering, forestry and landscape architecture. Associate degree programs in three areas are offered at the Ranger School on ESF’s Wanakena Campus in the Adirondacks.

Why should you support women in science?

ESF is not only the nation's oldest and most respected college dedicated solely to the study of the environment, it is also a leader in graduating women in science, forestry, engineering and other disciplines. But it wasn’t always like this. Back in ESF’s early years, then-Dean Hugh P. Baker wrote a letter to the parents of the new first-year students, saying, “Dear Friends, It gives us keen pleasure to have such a fine lot of boys here in the Class of 1919 in the College.” There wasn’t a single woman on the scene. It was some 30 years later that ESF graduated its first female scientists.

We’ve come a long way since 1919. ESF’s undergraduate student body is now 46 percent female.  Women at ESF serve as class marshals, departmental scholars and club presidents. They have published research results, been honored by professional organizations and studied internationally. They have gone on to be honored environmentalists, engineers, teachers and business owners.

But there is still much more to do. Even today, women, who make up half the total U.S. college-educated work force, represent only 29 percent of professionals in STEM, according to a U.S. Department of Commerce report. This gender disparity not only limits America’s innovative capacity and global competitiveness but also contributes to the persistent wage gap between men and women. Simply put, fewer women graduating in STEM fields means fewer women entering some of the highest-paying careers and working to solve our most pressing environmental challenges.

But ESF is working to change that. And you can help....Your donation, combined with others will make a tremendous impact, enabling female students at ESF to persist in their studies and graduate without the onus of heavy debt.   Please support the next generation of female environmental leaders by making a gift today!
