NYC Books Through Bars is a volunteer group that sends free, donated books to incarcerated people all around the country based upon their requests. We are raising money for our primary expense, which is postage!

Started in 1996, NYC Books Through Bars is a volunteer-run group that sends free, donated books to incarcerated individuals around the country.
How it works: Volunteer sessions take place three times a week to match letters sent by individuals in prison with books that meet their requests. See some letters here.
We have been doing this now for the past 22 years and we need your support to help us to continue into year 23! As our end of the year campaign, we are aiming to raise enough to cover the cost of one month's worth of packages, which is where all the funds we receive go directly towards. $3000 covers the cost of sending packages of books to around 1000 incarcerated people.
The letters of thanks we receive in return exemplify how grateful people are for our work, as books in prison are highly valued (to break the monotony and drudgery of life behind the walls, as well as for education) and get shared among many. We also hear how people would not have any books if it weren't for us due to the lack of a library or one that it is extremely limited, or lack of access to an existing library because of one's status in solitary confinement.
