"An actor, a musician, an artist, a director, a songwriter, a brother, a son, a friend." Have you ever been in an environment that changed your life? Where you were loved for who you are and pushed toward who you could become. Now, imagine how you’d feel if there was a possibility of having all of that taken away. To know that, without action, your life would change again… but for the worse.
Back in August of 2022, I applied to transfer into Bishop McNamara High School, and since then, I’ve been blessed with more opportunities than I can count. From a leading role in the musical to principal chair in the band, and even discovering a love for dance, McNamara has exposed me to so much for which I am deeply grateful.
One highlight of my time at BMHS has been co-founding the band “1 AM,” with a group of fellow musicians. The four piece R&B and Jazz Band which consists of saxophone, bass guitar, drums and keys started with small performances at sports games and school events, but we’ve since expanded to doing professional gigs across the entire DMV region.
Beyond the opportunities, Bishop McNamara has greatly expanded my social circle. From my band members and classmates to counselors and daily staff, the community I’ve found at this school is incredibly precious. These connections have also extended beyond the school, significantly impacting my life. For instance, my involvement with a dance studio, DDI, began as a way to improve my skills for school but has grown into a major part of my life.
All these reasons and more are why I’ve found a home at McNamara. However, attending this school isn’t easy and this is the reality of the situation. I live in a single-mother household with my two brothers and grandmother and this presents daily challenges. I remember the significant skepticism from my family when I proposed the idea of transferring to a private school. Why pay for school when you can go for free? But I knew the potential I had and the opportunities I could seize, and they weren’t going to come from my old school.
By the grace of God, I was able to work and receive scholarships. With just enough resources, I enrolled in Bishop McNamara but it was like hanging on by a thread. I completed my sophomore and junior year with a 4.42 GPA and great results all around, excited to move toward the final year of my high school career at the establishment I love.
That’s when I found out the tuition was being increased by $2000.
This is my senior year, and I want to share the authentic space that Mac has given me with the world around me. I want to make history at the school I call home and show my family that anything is possible.
But, I can’t do that without your help.
