In summer 2017, Dr. Kortney Ryan Ziegler casually tweeted an idea. Spare-change crowdfunded for bail assistance. The tweet was met with excitement and praise. Maybe it was a good enough idea for the time, money and sweat required to execute it? Later that year, in November 2017, Dr. Ryan-Ziegler and Tiffany Mikell delivered Appolition.
Appolition collects money for bail assistance and legal defense via spare-change. When users sign up, they're able to link their bank accounts and have daily purchases rounded up to the nearest dollar. The round-up amount is donated to Appolition, where funds are pooled. 75% of the funds are donated to bail funds around the country.
The app has been featured in international print and digital publications and received more than $1.5 million in earned media. In addition to praise, Appolition has raised more than $215,000 towards bail assistance, working with National Bail Out and the Portland Bail Fund.
While Appolition collects funds on its own platform, it is conducting a specialized campaign on an external platform to take advantage of the engagement, visibility and unique marketing benefits associated with Fundly.
