I am raising money for my nursing internship in South America this June in one of Peru, Arequipa's oldest hospitals, Hospital Goyeneche a very under-resourced and under-staffed hospital.

Hospital Goyenche has one of the best oncology centers in Peru. Peruvian people tend to come in for medical care when they no longer can take care of themselves at home due to their culture. Unfortunately, this means cancer is found in the very late stages, and requires extensive and aggressive treatment. Arequipa also still has incidences of Tuberculosis, (don't worry I am bringing my N95 mask :) ) and also due to the unsanitary conditions, many GI bugs are seen in the ER. I will need to bring my own gloves, goggles, hand sanitizer, disposable shoes, scrubs, gowns, lab jacket, etc. to protect myself and others while in Arequipa on placement. Since their hospital is under-resourced, things that usually would be a one time use in the US, are used several times in the hospital in Arequipa. Funding is limited, most of their funding goes to the Oncology ward due to the increased levels of cancer, especially skin cancer. I would like to take supplies with me to help, things we take for granted like surgical masks, gloves, normal saline, diapers, etc. are not as available as you would think.
