Brooklyn Aikikai is a nonprofit organization (dojo) that preserves, teaches, and promotes the traditional Japanese disciplines of Aikido, Zen, Misogi, and Iaido, in order to foster harmony within individuals.
Help us keep our community strong in body, mind, and spirit! Our annual Fall fundraiser is here and we need your support! Any amount you contribute will help.
Fall-a-thon:
On the morning of October 27th, dojo members will challenge themselves to take as many falls (i.e. be thrown), do as many sword cuts, and write as many Heart Sutras as they can in a set time period. You can sponsor a member's efforts (falls/throws, sword cuts, or sutras) for any length of time. Look to the right and select an amount of time (15 minutes, 30 minutes, etc) you'd like to sponsor a member for (or you can type in any donation amount you'd like after clicking on one of the listed amounts). Dojo members will be exerting themselves vigorously while being thrown around the mat continuously (ukemi), or repetitively practice-cutting with a sword (suburi), or copying Heart Sutras by hand while sitting on their knees (seiza) on a hard surface. Donate a lot and make them work hard!
Gala:
On the evening of October 27th, we will gather to celebrate our Fall-a-thon efforts and raise additional funds at our 5th annual Gala. Everyone donating $30 or more is invited to our Gala from 6-9pm at Digital Plus Gallery (411 3rd Avenue - Gowanus, Brooklyn - between 6th & 7th Streets, across the street from the dojo). We’ll have music, a fabulous silent auction, delicious farm-to-table snacks, and a raffle. We would love to see you there - please join us! Look to the right to select Gala tickets ($30 each; includes 2 drinks & snacks).
The money raised goes towards fulfilling Brooklyn Aikikai's mission, including by providing need-based scholarships for free/reduced dojo dues (for children & adults), sponsoring travel for attending seminars, bringing top-level visiting teachers from around the world to the dojo, providing members various special opportunities to deepen their training, and covering the maintenance costs of our training space- a rare, unique sanctuary in New York City for the study of these disciplines. Ultimately, we hope our members take this training and enrich their lives, neighborhoods, and larger communities. Watch the video above to learn more.
We recently celebrated our 10th Anniversary and we’re looking forward to the next 10 years in Brooklyn!
