Half of IUPUI students want to study abroad, but fewer than
10 percent ever do.
Many barriers stand between incoming freshmen and their
ticket overseas: Last year alone, 70 students who had already been accepted to
IUPUI study abroad programs withdrew due to financial limitations. With an
average cost of $4,250, studying abroad is out of reach for many IUPUI
students, especially for minority and first-generation students. One of the
largest costs facing students is the cost of a plane ticket.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, in an
increasingly global society, we can’t afford to let talented students who seek
an international experience miss out.
That’s why we plan to ensure that those 70 students—and
future generations of students just like them—have the support they need to
explore the world. By supporting a study abroad scholarship fund that supports
plane ticket costs at IUPUI, you can help our students gain the international
experience necessary to thrive in a global society. Students who study abroad
are more likely to:
- Graduate, and to do so on time
- Secure a job within a year of graduating —and at
significantly higher salaries
- Possess the leadership, adaptability, and
communication skills in high demand with today’s employers
In other words, study abroad is worth the investment—of time
by the student, and of financial support by IUPUI and our friends.
You are invited to celebrate the IUPUI Office of
International Affairs’ 30 Anniversary in 2019 by becoming one of
30 donors to donate $30 or more to celebrate the legacy and impact of
international programs at IUPUI.
