What’s ALS?
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, which causes loss of muscle control by impacting physical function leading to paralysis and death. There is currently no known cure for ALS and no effective treatment to stop or reverse the progression of the disease. In other words, ALS is a disease that attacks cells in the body that control movement and gives most patients no more than 5 years to live. It makes the brain stop talking to the muscles, causing increased paralysis over time. Ultimately, ALS patients become prisoners within their own bodies, unable to eat, breathe, or move on their own. Their mind, however, often remains sharp so they are aware of what’s happening to them.
Your donations will help these amazing organizations to continue to support people living with ALS, their caregivers, and their families while also supporting clinical trials and research.
